“Research Internships in Computational Biology ” guiding others to their research goals

In the last couple of years working, I have overseen the educational progress of 1000s of students joining our Omicslogic research programs. Ever Since I decided to come back to education (Edtech) from research (academic & Industry) my goals were to incorporate research into education. Something so evident but not to me when I was in high school, or when I was doing my bachelors in sciences not even a Masters in Bioinformatics gave me the understanding and importance of research. However, it took me a few years sipping tea and working late at night in a computational lab solving biological problems at the beautiful campus of Jawaharlal Nehru University, N. Delhi that changed the way research was meant to be for me. The clear objectives were to simplify the mysteries of Big data analysis through the lens that sees Biology as Data Science.

As we approach the summer, many are considering internships or jobs during the summer. A summer internship in bioinformatics is an exciting opportunity to gain experience, work with experts and apply the skills you learn in bioinformatics training to real-world challenges.

Training and Research — Steps based on omics “logic”

2. Evaluation

Independent project topic selection through literature review:

  • Research Proposal (Project Title, Project Description, Reference Publication & Datasets),
  • Experimental design: Pipelines & Algorithms, Data Processing, and normalization.

3. Practice

Practical coursework and exemplar projects in cancer, neuroscience, agriculture, biotechnology, and infectious diseases:

  • Processing, analysis, and integration methods
  • Reproducibility of research findings
  • Extracting meaningful insights from large datasets
  • Controlled and “real-world” experiments and data sources

4. Comprehension & Analysis

Exploratory analysis of a focused set of publicly available datasets to identify major trends and patterns for investigation:

  • Overview of project meta-data, the practice of analytical tests
  • Processing of data for analysis
  • Design of a statistical metric for inference
  • Analysis review and internal presentation

5. Investigation

In-depth review and practice of analytical methods, best data science practices, and algorithms applied to the data type of choice

  • Exploratory data analysis
  • Data-driven research hypothesis
  • Statistical testing and inference
  • Unsupervised and supervised Machine Learning

POST RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

There are several next steps that you can take after completing your project.

  1. You can conduct further research by developing a longer-term research direction with a mentor.
  2. Submit your project as a poster to many online conferences that happen all the time, where you can hear feedback and network with others with similar interests.
  3. Take part in competitions and hackathons on the topic of your interest to present your research and demonstrate skills
  4. Develop a relevant portfolio using the project as a starting point in your job search or career advancement.
  5. Work towards publishing your research in peer-reviewed journals
